Week Two: Hogarth and Topffer

Hogarth and Topffer
William Hogarth (1697-1764)
  • Deters prison
  • 2 panel paintings at University of Cambridge 
    • before and after paintings, before the man was going towards the woman and now the man is trying to steer away from the woman. The theme is moral, not to let lust take over - immoderation brings ill considered entangles. Hogarth is a moralist, many of his works have a moral message. 
  • The Harlot's Progress
    • he would create lotteries to give his paintings and prints away. 
    • 1st Panel:
      • Mother Needum: notorious London character, stoned to death
      • Mother Needum is looking at the young woman as a prize. 
      • Band under woman's arm shows that she is a seamstress. 
      • "To my loving cousin in Tems street"
      • The man at the doorway was a rapist, is there a pistol in his pocket
      • Clergyman on his horse, has a letter in his hand "To the high reverend father in London". A letter of recommendation, or a letter or introduction - trying to get a job.
      • The horse is eating hay, there is a sense of 2 things falling, the pots and baskets. 
      • Bell and Belle
      • the woman and the goose are two geese 
      • Unconcerned people
    • 2nd Panel: 
      • the woman is kicking the table
      • the monkey is a characature of the merchant, an antiemetic character
      • The servant opening the door, and the man is carrying a sword with his belt unbuckled, he is sneaking out the door and is the boyfriend of the mistress
    • 3rd Panel:
      • One of the girlfriends
      • There's a witches hat
      • Chief vice cop
      • came to arrest the woman, holding stolen goods
      • she gets sent to the work house
    • 4th Panel:
      • Work house
      • Pounding out flax making linen
    • 5th Panel:
      • Doctors with their cures seeing who's cures more effective 
      • The doctors don't really care about their patients - Hogarth is making fun of them. 
    • 6th Panel:
      • With family
Rodolphe Topffer (1799-1846)
  • A big name in comics history
  • His father was an artist, was Swiss - he wanted to be an artist but had a lot of vision problems
  • Founded a school which is a Primary, Secondary and baccalaureate school
  • Created the first comic strips - gel transfer with mimeograph machines. Reproducing an image and running it with gel and the gel would take the image and the ink would reside on the gel. 
  • Schercutagram: a man trying to catch butterflies, and then has the butterflies framed on the wall
  • A man sleeping and then thinks of himself as a warrior
  • A man out in the woods, and the wind blows away his hat, he has a lot of adventures and mishappennings.
